The idea of building the establishment of this institution was proposed in 1893. However, the Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University received its official name in the year 1938. 1893 | In 1893 the issue was raised to open a Boys’ Gymnasium in Batumi. Boy’s Gymnasium established in 1897 began functioning. In, 1900 it became possible to open a Women’s Gymnasium as well. |
1923 | A Pedagogical Institute was founded in the building of the former Women’s Gymnasium. It later turned into a Pedagogical College. |
1935 | In the building of the Boys’ Gymnasium, a 2-year Teacher’s Institute was opened. |
1938 | The Institute was named after Shota Rustaveli. |

It is conducted by NBE i.e., National Board of Examination, India. Foreign Indian Medical graduates who want to practice their doctorship in India need to clear this exam.
