In particular, Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, is a safe place, and most universities are located here. Indian culture and cinema are very famous in Timor-Leste, and locals are often infatuated with Indians.

• Same Weather: One of the major challenges while studying MBBS abroad in countries like Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, etc., is the cold weather. The temperature drops to -30 to -50 degrees in many of the cities in these countries. For Indian students, such a drastic change in the weather is often challenging. Moreover, due to differences in weather, there is a major variation in disease types. This results in students receiving clinical training on diseases that are not prevalent in India. This issue will not be a problem for those studying MBBS in Timor-Leste, as the weather is similar to that in India.

• Timor-Leste is a young nation that gained independence in 2002. It is bordered by Indonesia and the Timor Sea. Timor-Leste has a population of about 14-15 lakh and uses US Dollars as its currency. Their time is 3 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Indian Standard Time. For example, if it’s 1 pm in India, it will be 4:30 pm in Timor-Leste.
• The official languages are Tetum and Portuguese, with many people having some proficiency in English.
• Its capital is Dili, which is also the hub for higher education and medical institutions. Almost all the medical universities where Indian students are studying are located in Dili. The population of Dili is about 3.5 lakh.
• A one-way flight between Delhi and Dili costs around ₹35,000 and takes around 12-15 hours with a 1-stop. There are no direct flights between India and Timor-Leste.
• Timor-Leste is predominantly a Christian country, with about 99% of its 14 lakh population identifying as Roman Catholic.
• The cost of food and accommodation is slightly higher, at around ₹25,000-30,000 per month.

Before applying for an MBBS program in Timor-Leste, Indian students must meet the following basic eligibility requirements.

🎓 Academic Qualifications

•  Completed 10th and 12th from a recognised board in India
• Minimum age: 17 years on or before 31st December of the admission year
• No strict upper age limit (subject to NMC updates)
• Mandatory subjects: Physics, Chemistry, English & Biology
• Minimum 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology for the General category
• Minimum 40% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology for SC/ST/OBC (India norms)
• The student must have secured qualifying marks in NEET-UG before admission. The NEET result is valid for 3 years for MBBS admission abroad. Passing NEET is compulsory for eligibility to appear for FMGE in India after graduation.

MBBS in Timor-Leste typically follows a 6-year curriculum, divided into 5 years of theoretical education and a 1-year internship. This satisfies the conditions set out under the FMGL Regulations: a minimum course duration of 4.5 years, followed by a 1-year internship.

After graduation, students who return to India will have to qualify for the FMGE and complete a 1-year internship in India.

As of March 2026, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has not yet officially confirmed whether Timor-Leste or its medical universities fully comply with all FMGL Regulations. In fact, there is no such confirmation for any university or any country abroad. Since the introduction of the FMGL Regulations, unfortunately, NMC has not yet officially confirmed anything. However, in 2027, when the 1st batch under FMGL Regulations returns to India, NMC will have to inform us regarding which country’s medical degree is valid in India after full complying with FMGL Regulations.

What about the MBBS program of Timor-Leste?

The medical universities in Timor-Leste have designed the course structure to mirror the MBBS course in India. Everything will be as per the requirements under FMGL Regulations –

• Course duration – 5 years (minimum required is 54 months under FMGL Regulations)
• Additional internship – 1 year
• Curriculum – Same as India
• License to practice – Yes
• Medium of instruction – English, taught by Indian teachers

Although there is no confirmation from the NMC regarding which countries or universities are fulfilling the FMGL Regulations, the medical universities in Timor-Leste have restructured their MBBS program to meet all the conditions under the FMGL Regulations.

After completing MBBS in Timor-Leste, from a university recommended by GMF, Indian students can:

• Appear for FMGE to practice in India (subject to fulfilment of FMGL Regulations)
• Pursue postgraduate specialisation abroad or in India (after clearing NEET-PG)
