Disadvantages of MBBS in Belarus
Here are the disadvantages of MBBS in Belarus:
- Climate: Some students find it hard to adjust to the cold climate or weather of Belarus. The temperature will be below 0° for about 3-4 months. However, even when the temperature is below 0°, the students won’t have any problem when they are inside any building/car/bus. This is because all the buildings are centrally heated.
- Local Language: Going to any foreign country will mean that you will have to adjust yourself according to the new country. The students are taught the local language as a part of the curriculum. If the student takes interest in the subject, then they will have a good command on the language and this will help them in their day to day life and also at the time of hospital visits. However, if the student does not show interest in the local language, then he will lose confidence and will struggle while interacting with the patients.
- Duration: The course duration for MBBS in Belarus is 6 years. This is longer than the duration in some other countries like Kazakhstan, Bangladesh and Kyrgyzstan.
- For some students, homesickness is also a major issue.
- FMGE Result: The MCI passing percentage of none of the 4 MCI approved medical universities is good. We can’t recommend MBBS in Belarus due to this reason to Indian students.
- Better options available: There are better options available at a lower cost in countries such as Ukraine.
Performance in FMGE after MBBS from Belarus
Indian students have been studying in the 4 MCI recognised medical universities in Belarus for many years now. Belarus is not a new or upcoming destination for Indian MBBS students. However, it is not a popular option as the number of students going to Belarus is less. As you would know, after completing MBBS from any country abroad, you will have to sit for FMGE (also known as MCI Screening Test) upon your return to India. You will get the license to practice in India only after clearing this exam. This exam is conducted by the National Board of Examination or NBE. The NBE has released the country and college wise data of the number of students who have appeared and cleared FMGE. They have done so in 2 occasions. The first data revealed performance between 2012-14 and the second revealed data between 2015-18. Following is the performance of Indian students in these 2 periods:
FMGE Result (2012-14) | FMGE Result (2015-18) | FMGE Result (2019) |
57 passed out of 253 | 35 passed out of 395 | 26 passed out of 120 |
Please note that a number of students who didn’t pass FMGE in 2012-14 reappeared in 2015-18. As you can see, compared to countries such as Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan, not many students end up going to Belarus. Moreover, the performance of the students who returned to India after MBBS from Belarus has not been up to the mark. Here is college wise FMGE passing percentage:
It will be wrong to put a statement that MBBS from any particular country is not good. The fact is that, there are good, decent and below average colleges in every country. Every student should search and take admission in a good college only. However, given the recent performance by students in FMGE after MBBS in Belarus, we won’t recommend students to take admission here. Rather, we will suggest the following colleges/universities:
- Bukovinian State Medical University, Ukraine (best overall FMGE result in Ukraine, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia)
- Vinnitsa National Medical University, Ukraine
Bukovinian State Medical Univeristy has a budget of approx. ₹25-26 lakh total with fees, hostel and Indian mess. There are good options in countries such as the Philippines and Bangladesh also.
