New Delhi, July 9: The second round of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission into medical and dental courses is likely to be a repeat exam for lakhs of candidates.
Out of 4.75 lakh candidates registered for the July 24 exam, about 3.31 lakh have already taken the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) held in the first week of May, official sources said. The AIPMT is being considered as NEET-1 this year.
Repeat candidates will have to forgo their score in NEET-1 as per the decision of the Supreme Court.
“Possibly, these repeaters were relying on individual entrance tests of deemed universities and a few other medical institutions. Since no institution is holding entrance tests, these students may have preferred to take the risk and appear in NEET-2,” said K.S. Sharma, a member of the Medical Council of India (MCI).
Till last year, there were multiple routes for admission into medical institutions – the AIPMT, state government exams and tests held by deemed universities offering medical courses. But the apex court this year ruled out entrance tests by individual institutions.
Students qualifying the AIPMT, conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, are eligible for admission against 15 per cent all India quota seats in all medical colleges except the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Jammu and Kashmir.
From this year, the two-phase NEET has replaced the entrance tests of individual institutions. It is the only route for admission into deemed universities and management quota seats in private medical colleges.
Although the Supreme Court had ruled that NEET would be the only route for admission, the Centre brought an ordinance to allow states to continue with their own entrance tests or admit students on the basis of board exam marks for this year only.
The 4.75 lakh candidates appearing for NEET-2 include about 8,000 students who did not take the AIPMT even after registering for it.
Nandakishore Dukkipati, another MCI member, said many students might not have got enough time to prepare for the AIPMT, which could be the reason for taking NEET-2.
The candidates were allowed to apply till June 25. The CBSE will verify student data like signatures, photos and finger print impressions in the next few days. The NEET-2 would be held online on July 24. The results are expected on August 17.
