MBBS in Mauritius Duration
The MCI approved universities of Mauritius offer a 5-year MBBS course. After you complete the academic tenure in Mauritius, you can come to India and sit for a licensing exam. Once you clear the screening test, you will be required to do the internship in India. Currently, the duration of the internship is 1 year. After this, you will get a permanent license number to practice as a doctor in India.

Admission Process
Following are the admission process of the 2 MCI recognised medical universities in Mauritius:
Anna Medical College
Anna Medical college is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and all the essentials equipment required by a medical college. The faculty is a mix between Mauritius and Indian professors and that is one of the biggest reasons Indian students go for MBBS in Mauritius as there is uniqueness with a hint of familiarity. The college is well-equipped with tons of books and a teaching hospital in Flacq covering the area of 170,000 inhabitants in the East Mauritius region. It has Academic Affiliation from the University of Technology Mauritius and started the course in 2012. The degree awarded is called MBBS.

- Scrutiny of Information
The admission committee runs the information provided by the applicants and puts it under scrutiny. Information related to their class 10+2, grades, qualifications and the overall fit of the student to study in Mauritius. They also check the studentโs financial capability as to whether the family would be able to handle the fee or not.
- Short Listing
Students whose information has been checked and the grades have been taken into consideration are shortlisted for the further rounds by the admission committee. They are selected for the personal interview rounds whose location is notified to the students a week or so before. Anna Medical College also helps in a visa application for international students.ย
- Personal Interview
The admission committee of Anna Medical College will conduct a personal interview, which will be done in the English language and in an informal environment. After the interview, the required information regarding the interview is sent to the Dean compiled with recommendations as to the suitability of the students.
- Dean Approval
The Dean will then make a concrete decision based on the recommendations submitted by the admission committee
- Medical Fitness
The selected students have to be deemed fit by the selection committee before being finally accepted in the college. Students have to submit the medical certificate issued by an established doctor.
- Final Enrolment
Students selected have a stipulated time to enrol in the college by submitting documents and fees. Failure to enrol on time will result in cancellation of the admission. The college takes students in 2 batches- April and September.ย

SSR Medical College
Almost 20 years ago, SSR Medical College was the first medical college of Mauritius. Its strategic position near to the airport has made it a good choice for international students and especially Indian students. The campus is spread along with lush tea gardens with tons of natural beauty all around. All the international students are required to stay in the campus hostels, and they are differentiated for different genders. The mess is also provided. It is crucial for a medical college to have a hospital attached for the clinical training of the students and the students of SSR are provided training in Jawahar Lal Nehru, Victoria and other government-approved hospitals with more than 1,000 beds. It has Academic Affiliation from University of Mauritius Faculty of Science, Department of Medicine and started classes in 2002. The name of the degree awarded in MBBS.ย

- Filling Application Form
The students have to fill the application form with necessary details in their own handwriting. The form can be obtained from the registered office at Mauritius or the registered centre in New Delhi. All the details of the offices are provided in the prospectus of the college.
The college has strictly stated that mere submission of the application form and registration fees would not reserve a seat for the candidate. There is one more step that is taken in order to fill the seats for MBBS Course in SSR Medical College.
- Selection of Candidates
The selection is done based on the merit of the students as well as their suitability to pay the fees of the course.ย
The shortlisted students are invited to a personal interview round and are selected by the dean. Selected candidates will have to pay the required fee before the admission by D.D. in favour of “Indian Ocean Medical Institute Trust”.

Now, we have covered the advantages, it doesnโt mean that studying or in Mauritius doesnโt have its disadvantages. There are quite a few which can prove repulsive for Indian students trying to study abroad. The major disadvantages of studying MBBS in Mauritius are –
- Mauritius is a lot like India, so students who are trying to escape their country in search of new cultures and habits, Mauritius can prove to be dull.
- The biggest disadvantage is its limited colleges with high fee structures. Both colleges charge upward of โน40 lakhs (including hostel and mess) which can be quite a lot for some families. The 1st year budget is at least โน10-15 lakh.
- It is not particularly a cold country, so students trying to escape the heat of India would still be unimpressed.
- The island is small and quaint which still can be disappointing for some students.ย
- The population is only 12.7 lakh (2018 estimate). This means less patient inflow.
- The number of seats is limited.
- SSR Medical College provides hostel to only 80% of the new students. Rest have to find accommodation elsewhere.
- Anna Medical College’s hostel and campus are far away. You have to spend about โน80,000-1,00,000 per year for transportation.

- Hostel rooms have attached toilet and bathroom with a time-controlled hot water supply. The rooms are furnished with a bed and mattress, a reading table, a chair and a cupboard, which is to be returned intact on vacating the room. Hostel Residents have the option to take a full room for themselves for their single occupancy on payment of full room charge of USD 200 per pm = USD 2,400 per year (subject to availability of such rooms).
