Kunming Medical University is an MCI recognised medical school located in Kunming, Yunnan, China. It was earlier known as Kunming Medical College. It is a government university which was established in 1993. Many batches of Indian students have already passed out from this university. As per the data provided by the National Board of Examinations, India, a total of 209 Indian graduates of KMU appeared for FMGE between 2015-18. Out of them, only 18 managed to clear the licensing exam. Therefore the passing percentage was as low as just 8.61%. This is comparatively low and there are many better alternative options for MBBS in China. We don’t mean to say that this university is not good. In fact, it is among the best universities in China. Kunming Medical University History
1933 – Donglu University started its medicine course and eventually grew into the Kunming Medical University (KMU) as it is known today.
1937 – the program was expanded and became the School of Medicine of Yunnan University.
1956 – the School of Medicine of Yunnan University became an independent higher education institution. This institution came to be known as Kunming Medical College.
1993 – Kunming Medical College got listed in the list of the 6 key higher education institutions in the province.
Since its beginning, Kunming Medical University has grown rapidly in its number of students and reputation. It has well over 80,000 graduates. The university has established itself as the largest specialized medical university in Yunnan province.

MBBS Course Duration
The total duration of studying MBBS in China is 6 years. The same is mentioned in the admission letters, you will see that the duration mentioned is of 6 years. This duration is a 5 +1 year system wherein the last year is the internship.
The first 5 year is in-class training whereas the last year is clinical training in hospitals in China or India. The good thing is that most of the state medical councils in India recognise the internship done in China. After completing 6 years in China, you can come back to India and appear for NEXT (licensing exam).

Kunming Medical University Ranking
As per the website 4icu.org, Kunming Medical University ranking is 3,812 and the country rank is 522 as on 7 June 2020. Its ranking is better at Center for World University Rankings where the university is ranked at 1,550 in the world.
However, as stated by Global Medical Foundation on several occasions, these world rankings have no relevance while selecting the medical university for MBBS abroad.
The rankings which Indian students should be checking is the MCI result and Kunming Medical University‘s FMGE passing percentage was 8.61% only between 2015-18.
