Check the video below on Tashkent State Medical University (formerly Tashkent Medical Academy) by Shobhit Jayaswal. The video was shot at the campus of Tashkent State Medical University in April 2025:

Tashkent Medical Academy is one of the best and most prestigious medical universities. In April 2025, TMA was renamed Tashkent State Medical University. Shobhit Jayaswal visited Tashkent State Medical University in April 2025 and in previous years. He has interacted with many Indian students. The feedback received from the students is very positive regarding the quality of education, practical training and the city of Tashkent.

As Uzbekistan is one of the few countries that fulfils the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021 (as per the universities in Uzbekistan), its popularity has increased significantly in recent years. MBBS in Uzbekistan has thus become a very attractive option for Indian students. More than 1,000 Indian students are already studying at Tashkent Medical Academy.

There used to be three medical universities in Tashkent. However, in 2025, it was decided that Tashkent State Medical University would be established based on the Tashkent Medical Academy, the Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute and the Tashkent State Stomatological Institute.

Tashkent Medical Academy was established in July 2005 by the President of Uzbekistan through the merger of the First Tashkent State Medical Institute and the Second Tashkent State Medical Institute.

The MBBS course at TMA is 6 years, which includes a 1-year internship in Uzbekistan. The medium of instruction is English for the entire duration. However, students are required to learn the local language, which the university will teach from the first semester

History of Tashkent Medical Academy

1919–1931 – Faculty of Medicine, Turkestan State University

The history of Tashkent Medical Academy dates back over a century to April 1919, when Turkestan State University opened a branch for medicine in Tashkent.

1931–1990 – Tashkent State Medical Institute

In 1931, the medical faculty was reorganised as a separate medical institute. By 1932, student enrollment exceeded 1,000. In 1935, it was renamed the Central Asian Medical Institute.

During World War II (1941–1945), more than 10 hospitals were established at the institute. After the war, in 1945, a six-year curriculum was introduced, and the academy was equipped with specialised medical technology. By 1946, the university had over 2,750 students, and classes were conducted in Uzbek and Russian languages. By 1953, the number of students increased to over 3,150.

In 1954, the Department of Dentistry was established. In 1962, students from Asian, African, and Latin American countries started studying here. By 1972, more than 10,000 students were studying at the academy.
